Online Store: Ready-Made Platform or Custom Development — What to Choose in 2026

E-commerce11.06.2026

Everyone launching online sales hits the same fork in the road: rent a store on a ready-made platform (Khoroshop, Shopify, Prom.ua) or order custom online store development built around your business? There is no universal answer — but there is an honest comparison, and once you see it, the right choice for your situation becomes obvious.

Option 1: a ready-made platform (SaaS)

You pay a monthly rent ($20–100/mo) and get a ready-to-go builder: design templates, a shopping cart, integrations with Nova Poshta and payment gateways.

Platform pros

  • Fast launch. Your store can go live within a week.
  • Low barrier to entry. The first month costs less than dinner for two.
  • Standard integrations out of the box — shipping, payments, marketplace feeds.

Platform cons

  • Rent forever. $50/mo is $600/year, $3000 over five years. And the store still never becomes yours: stop paying — your business switches off.
  • A hard ceiling. A non-standard filter, a custom calculator, your own discount logic — "not supported on your plan".
  • Template look. Your store looks like thousands of others on the same platform.
  • Limited SEO. Technical fixes are often off-limits: duplicate pages, bloated code, slow platform scripts — and there is nothing you can do about it.

Option 2: custom development

A studio engineers the store around your products and processes. Cost — from €490, timeline — from 4 weeks.

Pros of owning your store

  • It is your asset. The code, the design, the customer base — all of it belongs to you, with no monthly "business rent".
  • Any logic you need. Wholesale pricing, configurators, integration with your CRM or ERP, non-standard delivery — everything can be built.
  • Speed and SEO without compromise. Category structure, structured data and load speed are engineered for search from day one — a direct lever on your Google rankings and your cost per lead in Google Shopping.
  • Unique design crafted for your audience, not template #47.

Cons

  • Higher upfront budget and a longer launch.
  • You need technical maintenance — one-off or monthly (usually cheaper than renting a mid-tier SaaS plan).

How to choose: three questions to ask yourself

  1. Are you testing a niche or building a business? Validating a hypothesis with 50 products — take a platform, that is perfectly fine. A business built for years of growth — go custom.
  2. Do you fit the template? If your processes are standard, a platform will carry you. Wholesale plus retail, your own pricing rules, complex filters — custom development only.
  3. Where will your customers come from? If you are betting on SEO and paid traffic, every percent of speed and structural flexibility converts into money. A custom store wins here by a wide margin, especially paired with SEO services.

A common scenario: platform first, migration later

Many of our clients walk this exact path: a year on a platform → the niche is proven → migration to their own store after hitting the ceiling. It is a valid playbook, but budget for the move: migrating products and preserving SEO rankings with correct 301 redirects. If you already know your niche works, building your own store right away is sometimes the cheaper route.

The verdict

A platform is for a quick test and standard processes. Custom development is for a business that plans to grow, rank in Google — and stop paying rent for its own store.
